Tobacco Cards

Collectible cards were given away with tobacco purchases for a number of years in the 19th and early 20th century. Cards in good condition are difficult to find and are highly collectible. There were several different sets featuring sportsmen including billiard players, as billiards was a very popular sport, second only to baseball. This page is sort of a mess in that there are many cards from all around the world making it difficult to lay them out in a nice way. Below the Allen & Ginter's set are the cards in order of their country of origin and then their age wihtin that group. You will need a wide screen to see everything, or you can slide over your browser to center the page and see all the images. Thanks to J. Michael Young for allowing the use of his scans on this page, thus saving countless hours of scanning and processing these cards from the collection.

Allen & Ginter's- Allen & Ginter's produced a large set of collectible cards in the late 19th century. These nine cards are only a sub set of the entire set of cards, which included baseball players, oarsmen, wrestlers, pugilists, rifle shooters, and billiard & pool players. Typically these nine cards can be found selling as the "Allen &Ginter's Set," which it surely is not; the complete set is difficult to assemble or find complete and is worth a large sum of money. These players are a virtual who's who of 19th-Century billiards and pool. Condition ranges from very good to excellent.
