New (May 2006) Joel Hercek Full-Spliced Cue- Unique Design
Joel Hercek is the cue maker that was precepted by Burton Spain, the famous blank maker and cue maker. In the early 1990s, the two worked together so that Joel could learn the trade and take over the business. It is no surprise that Joel makes one of the most sought after cues on the market today. Ordering a cue from Joel means waiting roughly eight to ten years before your name makes it to the top of his list of waiting customers. However, each of his cues are of the highest quality and nothing less than perfection leaves his shop...thus it is worth the wait.
Joel makes cues in the traditional sense but adds his own contemporary flavor. His cues are some of the very best built cues ever. The basis of his construction is the full splice with veneers. This splice technique arguably makes the most structurally sound cues. Joel's use of the butterfly splice to manage weight and balance is technique learned from Burton Spain. Every one of his cues are constructed this way.
This particular cue stick is new (May 2006) and features a very rare design in that most of Hercek's cues feature a wrap of some sort on the handle section of the cue. In this special design, the full splice of the cue is completely exposed. The forearm is curly maple. The points are made from ebony. The handle is amaranth or Purple Heart as it is commonly called. Notice the butterfly splice between the ebony and the amaranth; this splice is usually hidden beneath a wrap. The joint is ivory and the pin is 3/8"-10. All white inlays are ivory. I opted not to have an ivory butt cap because this cue will be used primarily as a playing cue.
This cue is 19.2 oz in weight, 57-1/2" long, and has two 12.75mm shafts with 3/4" ferrules (phenolic).
Joel is also the world's leading expert on Burton Spain cues and cue stick blanks.
The case in the first photo is made by Master Case Maker Jack Justis with a collaboration by R.G. Ross of St. Joe Indiana, who was responsible for the custom hand tooling and design of the case.
